Zodiacs, Astrology and Horoscopes

What are the Zodiacs?

The Zodiac signs are also known as sun signs. These signs are based on a range of dates that last about a month each. In Western Astrology it is typically the Tropical Zodiac that is used. A mathematician and astronomer named Ptolemy created the Tropical Zodiac and based it on the seasons. It is worked out from the position of the sun known as the ecliptic which travels through the horoscopes.

The Tropical Zodiac is a fixed system that is not affected by changes in the constellations or the earth’s axis. Ptolemy used the same names for the Zodiac as the constellations and this is why there is some confusion around the birth date range.

There are different types of Astrology! Vedic astrology also known as lyotish is the traditional Hindu astrology system. This system is based on the Sidereal (Nirayana) zodiac, this imaginary 360-degree ‘belt’ of the Zodiac is divided into 12 equal sectors. Verdic astrology differs from Western Astrology in that is measures fixed zodiac rather than the moving zodiac.

How does it work?

As we have said the Western Astrology Signs are based on the Earth’s rotation around the Sun not the positions of the constellations. This fixed and imaginary circle goes around the Sun and this is divided into 12 different 30-degree segments.

The Tropical Zodiac begins the year with Aries, this slice of the Zodiac wheel is based on the position of the Sun at the Spring Equinox. The Sun enters Cancer on the Summer Solstice which is the longest day of the year. It enters Libra at the Fall Equinox and then enters Capricorn at the Winter Solstice which is the shortest day of the year.

How to work out your Zodiac sign?

By looking at the different date ranges you can use your date of birth to work out which sign you are a member of. This can get a little difficult as these dates can vary by 1 or 2 days so do not get confused if you see some discrepancies in the dates online.

What if you was born on the border? Do not panic, the Sun moves into a new Zodiac every 30 days and approximately the same date every year. It can shift by a day from year to year and that is why the boarder seems to shift.

So some like to say that you get to be two signs instead of one, but this isn’t true. Whichever Zodiac sign the Sun was passing through at the exact time you were born is your true sign.

Horoscope fun!

Horoscope comes from the combination of two latin words; ‘horo’ meaning hour and ‘scope’ meaning view, so the ‘view of the hour’. Astrologers often refer to horoscopes as the astrological chart of a person or moment in time. Calculations are based upon the planetary positions in either the sidereal or tropical Zodiac. Your horoscope is personal just like your fingerprint as it is based on the date, place and time of your birth.

Horoscopes can often be read in magazines and newspapers but when astrologers work with individuals the use accurately-tied charts with energies that are unique to the individual. With this the different chart energies of the planets and signs serve as a potential personal expression within that individual. This has lead to much content on the common characteristics of each zodiac sign.

Each horoscope holds within it it’ planets, signs, houses, aspects and many points that reflect characteristics and patterns. However, it is our own free will and life experiences that allows us to work with these patterns and remold them to be expressed in many different ways.

So whilst horoscopes can be fun to read and look at, some individuals think that the horoscope writes our destiny and sets it in stone. This is not the case, it shows potentials and it is up to us how we use this. The horoscope can offer insight and awareness about our own personal potentials.

Many people think that the horoscope writes our destiny in stone. Not so! It shows potentials…how we use those potentials is our personal prerogative. What the horoscope can offer is insight and awareness about these potentials and their uses

It is always important to remember that we are not defined by our astrology. Use information about your Zodiac to look deep within yourself. Reflect on your characteristics and use all the 12 Zodiac to grow and become a well rounded individual. Use your Zodiac to teach others your strengths and work on your flaws.
