Question:

I am currently meditating daily and I have been getting better at focusing my attention and meditating for longer periods of time. During meditation I feel relaxed and open to spiritual energies. I often feel as though i leave my spiritual activities behind as I go about my day. How do i take what I have learnt and feel during meditation and apply this to my day?

Answer:

Life can get busy and hectic, it is easy to speed through without blinking. Sometime we may go through our day on autopilot and with this we are no longer centered and aware.

I am so glad your meditating is going and well and that it a great way to practice. The focus and attention that you use during meditation is exactly the mentality you need throughout the day. You may be feeling as though your spiritual practice only occurs in the times that you have set aside to practice it and I have met many people who have experienced this. When meditating at a certain time of day, going to spiritual clubs and events or religious activities, we are setting aside specific times to open up spiritually. Sometime when we go about our daily lives we are not as aware and it can feel as though we are not open spiritually.

With meditation there may be slight changes that have impacted on your daily life and you are unaware of, these can be things such as feeling relaxed, making better decisions, being more conscientious and open.

In order to integrate what you have learnt during meditation into your life there are a few things I would suggest practising. The attention and focus you feel whilst meditating centers you and grounds you to the present moment. A good way of doing this throughout the day is by simply checking your psyche. As you check your mind ask yourself these questions:

  • What am I doing right now?
  • What am I focused on?
  • Where is my body?
  • How do I feel?

A great way to initiate this is to make a ritual, ask yourself this every time you open a door or complete a certain task, wear a spiritual piece of jewelry and ask yourself these questions every time you see this item on you. Over time you will begin to think about these questions without noticing and feel present and centered at all times.

Another great way to feel open and spiritual throughout the day is by spending a few minutes completing mindful meditation. Even if it is only a few minutes here and there, it will allow you to slow down and become fully present in that moment.
